Moving into a new home prior to the festive season is great timing. It’s the perfect opportunity to sort out your existing decorations, keep the favourites and recycle or donate to charity everything else so that you can add to the excitement of moving into your wonderful new home and treat the interior to some fresh decorations. Maybe you’ve always wanted a show stopping tree in your hallway as guests arrive, have longed to dress your fireplace with pine branches and beautiful stockings.
Your front door is the first thing that your family, friends and carol singers will encounter so make sure a lovely wreath is hanging up to greet them. Creating your own wreath can be a fun activity – especially with a group of friends, finding foliage and adding beautiful decorations. Embellish and personalise a ready bought wreath by adding extra baubles, berries, cinnamon sticks or ribbons.
Make your home smell festive with the aromas of cinnamon, pine and berries. Individual candles with these fragrances placed in the middle of tables will evoke warmth and cosiness. Adorn your family dining table with a festive table runner, matching serviettes and finish with a great centrepiece which can be made with a number of candles in different sizes grouped together.
Your new staircase and bannisters are waiting to be strung with tinsel or pine branches to help the seasonal décor continue upstairs. Adding groups of baubles as the swathes ascend the stairs will provide sparkle perfectly. Another great use of this space is to hang your Christmas cards – combine ribbon with tiny pegs to hold them securely. Your new hardwood or tiled floors will look impressive all year but during the winter months, consider adding a splash of colour with a floor rug for those paths most trodden around the house, just to keep those toes cosy.
You may choose to find a local farm or garden centre to pick your eye-catching Christmas tree or opt for a re-usable artificial tree. Whether you love the traditional colour palette of red, gold and green, a cooler Scandinavian white, blue and silver combination or a personal palette with decorations collected over the years, each meaning something to your family, enjoy preparing for your first festive season in your lovely new home.
Moving home prior to Christmas means you can add a note into your Christmas cards (and send them a little earlier) to ensure everyone has your new address – including Father Christmas!
Help to minimise stress by organising your groceries to be home delivered so you don’t have to jostle around supermarkets after the house move and all the unpacking. All your festive fayre can be delivered direct to your door so you can fill your cupboards, fridge and freezer.
As you can’t always bet on a flurry of snow descending over the festive period, a spray of artificial snow on windows or outside shrubs can add to the festive magic and wonder. And it doesn’t melt and go slushy! A few snowy footprints to be discovered on Christmas morning will also add to the wonder for little ones.
Be sure to find out your rubbish and recycling days so you don’t have wrapping paper and boxes cluttering up your new property/garden. On a final sensible note – do ensure that once you get your keys to your new place, your building and contents insurance is up to date to cover all of your presents to keep your home safe and secure.
Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year from us all at Cumbrian Homes.
