Top Tips for Moving Home

21 Sep 2018

Moving home is regularly listed as one of the most stressful events in a person’s life so it is important to try and make the process as easy as possible.  At Cumbrian Homes, we don’t want the move to your new home to be chaotic, so we have pulled together some top tips to help make the move a piece of cake!

1. Start to pack as early as possible

It doesn’t matter how little you think you have, packing takes time!  More time than most will give it credit for.  Once you have an official moving in date, start packing.  The most obvious place to start is with the things you don’t use regularly e.g. spare room, garage.  Write on the boxes the contents and where they should go in your new home e.g. Kitchen.

2. Take the opportunity to declutter!

Are you a hoarder?  Or maybe you don’t think you’re a hoarder….until you start packing.  There is no point moving items that you have not looked at/used/worn for years to your new home… where they will continue to take up space and remain untouched.  By starting to pack up your belongings as early as possible, you can take advantage of being able to declutter your home and take only the items you need with you.

3. Hire Professionals

If you are in a position to be able to hire removal professionals, this will help to greatly decrease stress.  While there is nothing wrong with recruiting friends, family and your local van man to help you with the move, professional removal firms are just that; professional.

They do house removals on a daily basis and are able to pack up your home quickly and effortlessly.  They are careful with your belongings from, small boxes to large furniture items, so you are unlikely to experience any damage or breakages.  Many firms will also dismantle and then reassemble furniture for you, giving you one less job to do when you get to your new home.

For these reasons alone, it may be worth getting a few quotes from different removal companies to compare and weigh up this as an investment.

4. Pack an Essentials Box

Make sure you pack a box of essentials that you can take to your new home and have easily to hand.  Include bin bags, scissors, wipes and supplies for a cuppa!  Add anything you think is going to be useful to help you as begin to unpack in your new home.

It might also be a good idea to pack an overnight bag separately too with pyjamas, a change of clothes, phone charger and toiletries … just in case unpacking those boxes takes a little longer than planned!

Oh, and no matter what, don’t forget a toilet roll in the essentials box!

5. Changing Your Address

This may seem like an obvious one, but it’s a good idea to start preparing your change of address before you move.  A good way to do this is to write a list (or even create a spreadsheet) of everyone who needs to be informed.  You can even start letting people know a fortnight before you go such as your GP and dentist.

The Royal Mail will also put a redirect on your mail for a small fee and it is a good idea to get this set up so you don’t miss anything!

6. Fact Files

Fact files are more for the person who is moving into your property – but it does help stop lots of phone calls with questions about your previous home as they arise.

A fact file doesn’t need to be an in-depth booklet – just a list of where to find things in the house, such as the fuse box or the stopcock, when bin day is, any instructions for anything that you are leaving behind and who your utility suppliers are in case they decide to set up their own account with them.

A fact file should hold anything you think the new owner should know and it might even remind you of little jobs you still need to do, like submit your final meter readings for example.
